CBD vs. THC — What’s the Difference?
The canna-craze continues to grow as more products with varying levels of different cannabinoids hit the shelves throughout the country. But with so many different cannabinoids to choose from, it’s hard to know where to start or what to look for.
Don’t worry, we’ll break it down for you! Here is a quick guide to the two main cannabinoids that you’ll come across in our industry: CBD and THC.
Chemistry
Both cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are chemical compounds naturally found in cannabis plants. They have the same molecular structure with a slight variation in the arrangement of their atoms — giving them different characteristics.
Legality
Technically, both THC and CBD are classified as Schedule I drugs under federal law. However, there are some nuances.
In a nutshell:
THC is not federally legal, but is legal in many states, including Minnesota.
CBD is federally legal when derived from hemp, but is not legal in all states.
Because hemp has been removed from the Controlled Substances Act, it is considered federally legal, even though the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still classify CBD as a Schedule I drug.
While scientifically there is no difference between hemp and marijuana, their legal definitions differ: marijuana refers to any cannabis containing over 0.3% THC (and is federally illegal), and hemp refers to cannabis containing 0.3% THC or less.
Because hemp is federally legal, hemp-derived CBD is legal. More work still must be done for the widespread legalization of marijuana.
Benefits
Both CBD and THC interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, though with different effects. The most noticeable difference is that the “high” sensation often associated with marijuana is produced by THC, while CBD does not have this effect. However, CBD and THC share other similar effects and can often be used to treat similar conditions. This includes:
Pain relief
Reducing nausea
Easing migraines
Reducing anxiety
Alleviating insomnia
Anti-inflammatory characteristics
Along with these benefits, CBD is also believed to ease depression, decrease seizures, and help with psychosis.
However, dosage, frequency, and product quality can affect how any of these benefits work for you. That’s why, if you are canna-curious and want to try out something new, it’s a good idea to start with low amounts and consume slowly, also known as microdosing.
